Biographical/Historical:     Lafayette County was formed from part of Madison County by an act of the State Legislature on December 23, 1856 (Ch. 806, Laws). The Lafayette County Courthouse was destroyed by fire on December 31, 1892.  In 1921, Dixie County was created from the southern portion of Lafayette County (Ch. 8514, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the chancery records of Lafayette County, Florida from 1893 to 1930.  The series includes a chancery docket (1893-1930) and chancery orders (1893-1911). Chancery is a court proceeding pertaining to impartial justice between two parties which claim conflict.  In chancery cases a person seeks to compel someone to do something or to refrain from doing something.  Chancery courts handle divorces, foreclosures of liens, receiverships, partitions, trusts, and real property controversies, etc.
    The chancery docket lists each case, the date it was filed and any court orders pertaining to it.  The majority of the cases are divorce cases.
    The chancery orders book consists of a record of orders handed down by the court in chancery cases.  The majority of the orders concern divorce cases and mortgage foreclosures.  The chancery orders volume contains an index.
