Biographical/Historical:     Hillsborough County was created by an act (No. 25, Laws) of the Legislative Council on January 25, 1834.  Originally a part of Alachua and Monroe counties, Hillsborough county underwent several boundary changes.  During the 1850s and 1860s Hillsborough and Orange counties were adjoined.  How they were adjoined and subsequently separated is unresolved due to confused statutes. Several counties were created from Hillsborough; Manatee on January 9, 1855 (No. 19, Laws), Polk on December 13, 1861 (No. 50, Laws) and Pinellas on May 23, 1911 (No. 128, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the naturalization records of Hillsbourough County, Florida from 1888 to 1906.  The series contains declarations of intention (1888-1906), certificates of naturalization (1888-1906) and indexes to naturalization records (1888-1906).  The declarations of intention (1870-1906) record the intention of an alien to become a citizen.  Declarations contain name, age and length of residence in the United States.  Book 4 contains an index.
Certificates granted citizenship and contain name, country of origin and length of residence in the United States.  Some certificates were filed in the criminal court of record (1903-1906) though they were not involved in criminal cases.  Books 4, 5 and Book 1 (criminal court certificates) contain an index.  All certificates are indexed in the general index.  County records do not include a Book 3.
