Patents are the first-title-deed, which legally transferred land from the government to an individual or other entity.  Land claimants or purchasers applied for patents after all other requirements regarding the land were met.  Some new land owners recorded their patents in county deed records.  The patent records contain a description of the land and the name of the patentee, and give the volume and page number of the original patent record filed in the Government Land Office.  Patent Record No. 2 contains an index (1921-1938).
