Marriage licenses are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  That person filled out the portion of the license certifiying that the marriage took place and the license was returned to the clerk of the court. Licenses document when the couple applied for the license, the applicants names, when the ceremony was performed and who performed it.  Each volume contains an index.
Affidavits for marriage licenses state the couples ages at the time of application.  If either of the couple were underage, the affidavit contains the consent of the parent or guardian for the marriage to take place.  Applications for marriage license document the applicants' names, age, race, birthplace, occupation, and whether either of the applicants had previously been married. Applications sometimes included affidavits and once completed were often used as the marriage license, containing the date of the wedding and who performed the ceremony.  Applications for marriage licenses 1933-1939 are arranged chronologically by application (or C.J.) number.
