Biographical/Historical:     The Justice of the Peace Courts were established by the Territorial Council in 1822.  They originally had jurisdiction in cases of law in which the demand or value of the property involved did not exceed twenty dollars and in which the cause of action accrued or the defendant resides in his district; and in such criminal cases, except felonies, as may be prescribed by law.
Summary:     The series contains the files of cases heard before the Justice of the Peace Court for Jefferson County from approximately 1831 to 1917.  The files contain complaints; summons; petitions; orders; depositions and affidavits; decrees, verdicts and judgments rendered; and bills of costs.  Other Jefferson County court records may be found in series L346 Miscellaneous court records.
