Biographical/Historical:     When Florida became a state in 1845, the General Assembly established the Circuit Court system.  The Circuit Courts assumed the duties of the Superior Courts and any cases which were pending in the Superior Courts were transferred to the Circuit Court. Jefferson County, established in 1827 in north Florida, was originally part of the Middle Circuit.  It later became part of the 2nd Judicial Circuit.
    The Circuit Courts originally had exclusive jurisdiction in all cases in equity, also in all cases at law, not heard by inferior courts, and in all cases involving the legality of any tax, assessment, or toll; of all actions involving the titles or boundaries of real estate; and of all criminal cases not heard by inferior courts.  The Circuit Court also had final appellate jurisdiction in all civil and criminal cases arising in the County Court; and appellate jurisdiction of matters arising before County Judges pertaining to probate, estate, or interests of minors.
Summary:     The series contains the files of cases heard before the Circuit Court of Jefferson County from 1845 to approximately 1920.  The files contain complaints; summons; petitions, orders; depositions and affidavits; decrees, verdicts, and judgments rendered; and bills of costs.  Other Jefferson County court records may be found in series L346 Miscellaneous court records.
