Biographical/Historical:     Washington County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on December 9, 1825 (Territorial Laws, 4th session).  It was formed from parts of Jackson and Walton Counties.  The boundaries of Washington County have been altered many times since then.  The county line between Washington and Jackson Counties was altered slightly throughout the 1830s and again in 1893 (Laws, Ch. 4236). In 1838, Calhoun County was created in part from southeast Washington County (Territorial Laws, 16th session, no. 8).  The line between Washington and Calhoun Counties was altered slightly several times in the late 1800s, including in 1873 (Laws, Ch. 1950).  In 1913, Bay County was created from the southern portion of Washington County (Laws, Ch. 6505).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Washington County, Florida, from 1877 to 1973.  The documents include general indexes to brides and grooms (1877-1973), marriage record books (1877-1962), marriage licenses(1901-1927), and applications for marriage licenses (1928-1950).
Marriage record books consist of the recorded copies of marriage licenses.  They document when a couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony. Marriage record book A also contains a list of permits or licenses to practice law and medicine, sell liquor, peddle, etc., dated 1878 to 1880.  Several of the books are indexed.
Marriage licenses are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  That person filled out the portion of the license certifying that the marriage took place and the license was returned to the clerk of the court. Often included with the licenses are parental consents for underage applicants.
Applications for marriage license document the applicants' names, age, race, birthplace, occupation, and whether either of the applicants had previously been married.  Applications sometimes included affidavits and once completed were often used as the marriage license, containing the date of the wedding and who performed the ceremony.  Many of the applications also include parental consents.
