Biographical/Historical:
Putnam County was created by an act of the State Legislature on January 13, 1849 (Ch. 280, Laws). It was formed from western Saint Johns County, northeastern Alachua County, northeastern Marion County, and northwestern Orange County. From 1849 until 1887, the boundaries of Putnam County were altered slightly by the Legislature several times: in 1868, the boundary between Putnam and Saint Johns counties was changed (Ch. 1673, Laws); in 1883, the boundary between Putnam and Clay counties was changed (Ch. 3469, Laws); and in 1887, the boundary between Putnam and Marion counties was changed (Ch. 3767, Laws), leaving Putnam County with its present day boundaries. The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:
This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Putnam County, Florida, from 1849 to 1974. The series includes marriage record books (1849-1930), a register of marriage licenses issued (1889-1896), and loose marriage licenses and applications (1849-1974). The register of marriage licenses issued lists the names of the bride and groom; the date the license was issued, executed and returned; and by whom the license was executed. Each entry also denotes the race of the couple.
Marriage record books (or marriage license records) consist of the recorded copies of marriage licenses. They document when a couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony. All the marriage record books, except Book A, contain an index.
Finally, the series contains loose marriage licenses and license applications. Marriage licenses are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony. That person filled out the portion of the license certifying that the marriage took place and the license was returned to the clerk of the court. Applications for marriage license document the applicants' names, ages, race, birthplaces, and occupations, and whether either of the applicants had been previously married. The applications may include affidavits and consents for underage couples. Both documents are not included for all couples.
