Biographical/Historical:     Polk County was created by an act of the Legislative Council of Florida on February 4, 1861 (Laws, Chap. 1201).  It was formed from Hillsborough and Brevard Counties.  In 1873 the boundaries were changed when Orange County defined its boundaries.  The last change occurred when Polk County defined its boundaries in 1891.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records for Polk County, Florida from 1862 to 1951.  The series contains a general index to marriage record books (1887-1947), marriage record books (1862-1951), loose marriage licenses (1900-1927) and marriage license applications (1928-1950).
    The general indexes are indexed by both the bride and the groom.
    Marriage record books consist of the recorded copies of marriage licenses.  They document when a couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony.
    Marriage licenses are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  That person filled out the portion of the license certifying that the marriage took place and the license was returned to the clerk of the court.
    Applications for marriage license document the applicants' names, age, race, birthplace, occupation, and whether either of the applicants had previously been married.  Applications sometimes included affidavits and once completed were often used as the marriage license, containing the date of the wedding and who performed the ceremony.  The marriage applications for the years 1833-1937 were destroyed.
