Biographical/Historical:     Palm Beach County was formed from the northern portion of Dade County by an act of the State Legislature in 1909 (Ch. 5970, Laws). In 1915, Broward County was created in part from portions of southern Palm Beach County (Ch. 6934, Laws), and in 1925, Martin County was created in part from portions of northern Palm Beach County (Ch. 10180, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the general index to estates of Palm Beach County, Florida, from 1909 to 1961.  The volume is an index to probate records.  Probate is the transfer of property title and rights and of legal responsibility for payment of taxes or of custody from the deceased to another party, from a person judged incompetent or insane, or from a minor to an appointed guardian.  Probate records document the administration and distribution of an individual's estate after death.
    The index lists the decedent's name, his representative or attorney, the type of records (wills, guardianship, administration, etc.), the date letters were granted, the file number, and the docket and page number denoting the location of the probate material.  The series does not contain the actual probate records that the indexes reference.
