In 1917, the Legislature created Okeechobee County, in part from the southern section of Osceola County (Ch. 7401, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.

Marriage licenses are printed documents which a couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  That person filled out the portion of the license certifying that the marriage took place, and the license was returned to the clerk of the court.
