Biographical/Historical:     On January 30, 1845, Mosquito County was renamed Orange County by an act of the Legislative Council of Florida.  Prior to the name change, Mosquito County had been one of the largest counties in Florida when it was created by the Legislative Council on December 29, 1824.  In 1844, the county was reduced by half when Saint Lucia County was formed from the southern portion of Mosquito County. After the name change, Orange County underwent several boundary changes when other counties were created.  The boundaries changed when Volusia County was created in 1854, when Lake County was created in 1887 and when Seminole County was created in 1913. During the 1850s and 1860s, Orange County and Hillsborough County were adjoined.  How they were adjoined and subsequently separated is unresolved due to confused statutes.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the probate records for Orange County, Florida from 1869 to 1940.  The series contains probate packets, referred to as cases, and indexes (1869-1940).
Probate is the transfer of property title and rights and of legal responsibility for payment of taxes or custody from the deceased to another party, from a person judged incompetent or insane, or from a minor to an appointed guardian.  Probate records document the administration and distribution of an individual's estate after death.
A will is a legal instrument by which a person declares how they wish their property or estate to be disposed of after their death. Wills usually contain direct statements of relationship between the deceased and his family and denote ownership of specific property and goods.
Administration records concern people who died intestate -- having no valid will and thus no provisions for their estate.  These records document the appointment by the court of an administrator for such an estate.
The probate packets consist of cases numbered 1 to 369.  The packets include wills, estate inventories, letters, and administration records.
