On January 30, 1845, Mosquito County was renamed Orange County by an act of the Legislative Council of Florida. Prior to the name change, Mosquito County had been one of the largest counties in Florida when it was created by the Legislative Council on December 29, 1824. In 1844, the county was reduced by half when Saint Lucia County was formed from the southern portion of Mosquito County. After the name change, Orange County underwent several boundary changes when other counties were created. The boundaries changed when Volusia County was created in 1854, when Lake County was created in 1887 and when Seminole County was created in 1913. During the 1850s and 1860s, Orange County and Hillsborough County were adjoined. How they were adjoined and subsequently separated is unresolved due to confused statutes.
