Biographical/Historical:     Marion County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on March 14, 1844.  It was formed from a portion of Alachua County and part of now non-existant Mosquito County.  Marion County's boundary was altered in 1853 when the southern portion was used for the creation of Sumter County. The boundary was altered again in 1877 when a northwest portion was annexed into Levy County.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Marion County, Florida from 1844 to 1975.  The series contains marriage record books containing marriage licenses (1844-1931), marriage license books (1888-1950), marriage applications (1941-1950) and indexes to marriage records and licenses (1844-1975).
Applications for marriage license document the applicants' names, age, race, birthplace, occupation, and whether either of the applicants had previously been married.  Applications sometimes included affidavits and once completed were often used as the marriage license, containing the date of the wedding and who performed the ceremony.
Marriage licenses are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  That person filled out the portion of the license certifying that the marriage took place and the license was returned to the clerk of the court.
The indexes are divided into separate volumes and are labeled male or female.  These indexes list names, dates of marriage, volume and page number.  Some of the marriage license books contain a partial index.
