Biographical/Historical:     Manatee County was created in 1855 by an act of the State Legislature (Ch. 628, Laws).  It was formed from the southern portion of Hillsborough County.  In 1874, the Legislature enlarged Manatee County, extending its eastern border to theKissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee (Ch. 1998, Laws).  In 1887, DeSoto County was formed from the southern and eastern portions of Manatee County (Ch. 3770, Laws), and in 1921, Sarasota County was created from the remaining southern portion of Manatee (Ch. 8515, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Manatee County, Florida, from 1856 to 1952.  The series contains an index to marriage licenses (ca. 1856-1885); a miscellaneous record book (1859-1878); a marriage license docket (1885-1898); records of marriage licenses (1898-1952); and marriage license applications (1856-1950).
      Records of marriage licenses document when the couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony.  Each volume contains an index to both brides and grooms.
    Applications for marriage licenses document each applicant's name, age, race, birthplace, occupation, and whether either had been previously married.  Applications sometimes included consent affidavits needed for applicants who were minors.  Once completed, the applications were often used as the marriage license, containing the date of the wedding and who performed the ceremony.
    The index to marriage licenses contains a direct index (by groom) and an indirect index (by bride). The marriage license docket contains copies of marriage licenses.  It is similar in form and content to the marriage license record books.  The marriage license docket is indexed.
    The miscellaneous record book contains additional marriage license records as well as deeds and bonds.
