Biographical/Historical:     Lafayette County was formed from part of Madison County by an act of the State Legislature on December 23, 1856 (Ch. 806, Laws). The Lafayette County Courthouse was destroyed by fire on December 31, 1892.  In 1921, Dixie County was created from the southern portion of Lafayette County (Ch. 8514, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Lafayette County, Florida from 1857 to 1967.  The series contains marriage record books (1857-1890), marriage license record books (1890-1953), marriage licenses (1887-1928), marriage applications (1933-1950), and a general index to marriages (1857-1967).
The marriage record books document that a couple applied for a marriage license and was granted permission to marry.  The marriage license record books are the bound and recorded copies of marriage licenses issued.  They document the date of the marriage and who performed the ceremony.  Each volume of the marriage record books and the marriage license record books contains an index.
Marriage licenses are the original, printed documents which a couple took to the individual who performed their wedding ceremony. That person filled out the portion of the license certifying that the marriage occurred and the license was returned to the clerk of the court.
Applications for marriage licenses document the applicants' names, ages, races, birthplaces, and occupations, and whether either of the applicants had been previously married.  The applications may include affidavits which document a parent's or guardian's consent for the marriage if either the bride or groom were underage.  Once completed the applications were often used as a marriage license, documenting the date of the wedding and who performed the ceremony.
The general index to marriages records the names of the bride and groom, the date of the marriage, and the record book and page on which the marriage is documented.  The index is arranged alphabetically by the last names of both brides and grooms.
