Biographical/Historical:     Jackson County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on August 12, 1822.  One of the four origional counties in the territory, Jackson has undergone four boundary changes since inception.  In 1832 the boundary between Jackson and Calhoun Counties was altered and fixed (Chap. 32, Laws).  Jackson County land was annexed into Calhoun County in 1845 (Chap. 29, Laws).  In 1847, boundary changes were made for the creation of Holmes County (Chap. 180, Laws).  Finally in 1893, boundaries were further defined between Jackson and Washington Counties (Chap. 4236, Laws).  Jackson County's courthouse was destroyed by fire on November 30, 1848.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series contains a microfilm copy of the deed records of Jackson County, Florida from 1829 to 1905.  The series contains a reverse index to the deeds (1824-1896), a direct index to the deeds (1824-1896), land sold for taxes (1872-1906), a tract book (1829-1905), a book of homestead exemptions (1888-1911) and a book of land grants (1829-1905).  The land records contain a brief description of the land, the owner's name, and the name of the purchaser.
    In the broadest sense, a deed (or conveyance) is a legal instrument by which real property is transferred from one party to another.  Deed books contain many types of title conveyances and contracts.  Among the most common types are warranty deeds, quitclaim deeds, and deeds of gift.
    The homestead exemption book documents real and personal property exempt from forced sale by the courts under the homestead law of 1868.
