Biographical/Historical:     Holmes County was organized on January 8, 1848 (No. 41, Laws) by an act of the Legislative Council.  It was formed from land of Washington, Jackson and Walton Counties.  The boundaries remained intact except for an annexation of part of Washington County on May 10, 1915.  The Holmes County courthouse was destroyed by fire on January 8, 1902.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of marriage records from 1902 to 1952.  The series contains marriage licenses (1902 to 1952) and affidavits recording the marriages (1921 to 1922) in Holmes County.  The records are indexed by both names.
    Affidavits for marriage licenses state the couples age at the time of application.  If either of the couple were underage, the affidavits contains the parent or guardians consent for the marriage to take place.  Affidavits could either be a part of the application for marriage license or a separate document.
    Marriage licenses are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  That person filled out the portion of the license certifying that the marriage took place and the license was returned to the clerk of the court.
