Biographical/Historical:     Hillsborough County was created by an act (No., 25, Laws) of the Legislative Council on January 25, 1834.  Originally a part of Alachua and Monroe counties, Hillsborough county underwent several boundary changes.  Manatee county was created from Hillsborough by an act of the Legislative Council (No. 19, Laws) on January 9, 1855. During the 1850s and 1860s Hillsborough and Orange counties were adjoined.  How they were adjoined and subsequently separated is unresolved due to confused statutes.  Two additional counties were created from Hillsborough; Polk county on December 13, 1861 (No. 50, Laws) and Pinellas county, on May 23, 1911 (No. 128, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the soldier and sailor discharges of Hillsborough County, Florida from 1917 to 1957. The series contains discharge records (1919-1921) and a general index to discharges (1917-1957).
Each county in the United States was required to record the honorable discharge of soldiers and sailors who served in World War I.  The records are usually typed or handwritten transcripts of the original document given to the soldier.  The records contain the individual's name, race, rank, series number, reason for discharge, birthplace, age at time of enlistment, occupation, and physical description.  The enlistment record, usually included with the discharge record, gives the length of service, prior service, marital status, arms and horsemanship qualifications, advancement, battles, decorations and honors, leaves of absence, physical condition, and character evaluation.  The discharge records (1919-1921) contain an index.  The general index (1917-1957) records the individual's name, branch of service, and the date the discharge was filed.
