Biographical/Historical:     Hernando County was created on January 22, 1850 by an act of the Legislature (No. 104, Laws) which changed the name of Benton County to Hernando County.  Citrus and Pasco counties were created from portions of Hernando County on June 2, 1887 (No. 22, Laws).  The Hernando County Courthouse was destroyed by fire in September of 1877.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the deed records of Hernando County, Florida from 1878 to 1929.  The series contains deed record books (1878-1919), a miscellaneous record book (1883-1899), and a general index to deeds (1878-1929).  In the broadest sense, a deed (or conveyance) is a legal instrument by which real property is transferred from one party to another.  Deed books contain many types of title conveyances and contracts.  Among the most common types are warranty deeds, quitclaim deeds, deeds of gift, mortgages and tax records.
    The record books contain homestead certificates, mortgages and tax deeds.  The miscellaneous record book contains contracts, agreements and other typical deed records.  There are direct (grantor) and indirect (grantee) indexes.
