Biographical/Historical:     DeSoto County was created by an act (Ch. 3770, Laws) of the State Legislature on May 19, 1887.  It was formed from a portion of Manatee County.  A subsequent act (Ch. 8513, Laws) of the State Legislature on April 23, 1921 formed four additional counties from DeSoto: Hardee, Highlands, Glades and Charlotte.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of DeSoto County, Florida from 1887 to 1953.  The records include record books (1887-1953), marriage registers (1906-1924), and marriage applications or licenses (1919-1950).  The record books (1887-1953) document when the couple applied for the marriage license, when they got married, and who performed the ceremony.  All of the record books contain indexes.
The marriage registers (1906-1913) contain a chronological listing of marriages which include the date of marriage, the name of the bride and groom, who performed the ceremony,  The loose marriage applications or licenses (1919-1950) are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony.  After 1919, a affidavit is attached to each license which states the age of age of the couple at the time of application.  If either of the couple was underage, the bottom portion of the form, the consent affidavit, was filled out by the parent or guardian giving permission for the marriage to take place.  After the wedding ceremony was performed, the couple returned the license to the clerk of the court.  The loose marriage licenses are not indexed.  The loose marriage applications are requests for a marriage license and may contain the consent affidavit.  There are no applications for the years 1925 through 1927.  From 1919 until 1930 the applications are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the groom.  After 1931 they are arranged chronologically.  The applications are not indexed.
