Biographical/Historical:     Columbia County was created by an act (No. 25, Laws) of the Legislative Council on February 4, 1832.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.  The Columbia County courthouse was twice destroyed by fire, first in 1846 and then again in 1860.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of probate records from Columbia County, Florida, from 1860 to 1955.  The documents include general indexes to probate records (1860-1955); wills (1877-1899); guardianship records (1868-1924); estate inventories and appraisements (1871-1899); and other probate records.  Many of the records contain an index in the front of the book.
    Probate is the transfer of property title and rights and of legal responsibility for payment of taxes or custody from the deceased to another party, from a person judged incompetent or insane, or from a minor to an appointed guardian.  Probate records document the administration and distribution of an individual's estate after death.
