Biographical/Historical:     Columbia County was created by an act (No. 25, Laws) of the Legislative Council on February 4, 1832.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.  The Columbia County courthouse was twice destroyed by fire, first in 1846 and then again in 1860.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the deed records of Columbia County, Florida from 1874 to 1903.  The series also includes direct indexes to the deeds (1849-1932) and reverse indexes to the deeds (1849-1899).  In the broadest sense, a deed (or conveyance) is a legal instrument by which real property is transferred from one party to another.  Deed books contain many types of title conveyances and contracts.  Among the most common types are warranty deeds, quitclaim deeds, and deeds of gift.
