Biographical/Historical:     The office of Sheriff in Florida was authorized and established by the Constitution of 1885 (Article VIII, Section 6).  It provided that a Sheriff should be elected in each county.  The Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining law and order; carrying out the orders of the courts; protecting people and their property; and supervising the operation of the county jail.
Summary:     The series contains the criminal dockets maintained by the Leon County Sheriff's Office from 1922 to 1974.  The dockets indicate the charges made by the Sheriff to the various agencies that used the facilities and services provided by the office.
    From 1935 to 1957, the charges and services are listed by category.  The information is entered onto a standard numbered form. The forms are: 1) Conviction Record; 2) Warrants and Capias in County Judge's Court; 3) Witness and Subpoenas in County Judge's Court; 4) Handling Prisoners in County Judge's Court; 5) Criminal Index; 6) Jury Service; 7) Court Attendance; 8) Feeding County Prisoners; 9) Court Orders; 10) Coroner's Inquests; 11) Miscellaneous Charges; and 12) County Commissioners.  On the forms related to prisoners or defendants, the names of the individuals involved are listed.
    There are no volumes for the years 1946-1947, 1950-1956, and 1958-1966.  From 1958 to 1974, the volumes only contain the form for feeding prisoners.
