Biographical/Historical:     Gadsden County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on June 24, 1823.  Originally part of Jackson County, Gadsden encompassed "all that part of the Territory east of Apalachicola and West of the Suwanee and Alapaha rivers."  The county underwent several changes to its boundaries until 1909.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.  In November of 1849, the Gadsden County courthouse was destroyed by fire, thus many of its earliest records are lost.
Summary:     The series consists of microfilmed copies of the marriage records of Gadsden County, Florida from 1849 to 1964.  The records include bound volumes from 1849 to 1964, loose marriage licenses from 1849 to 1941, and loose marriage applications from 1929 to 1950.  There is a gap in the loose marriage licenses from 1853 to 1869.  The record books document when the couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony.  Each volume contains an index.  Many of the records are divided by race.
The loose marriage licenses are printed documents which the couple took to the individual who performed the wedding ceremony. After 1919, an affidavit is attached to each license which states the age of the couple at the time of application.  If either of the couple was underage, the bottom portion of the form, the consent affidavit, was filled out by the parent or guardian giving permission for the marriage to take place.  After the wedding ceremony was performed, the couple returned the license to the clerk of the court.  The loose marriage licenses are not indexed.
