Biographical/Historical:     Gadsden County was created by an act of the Legislative Council on June 24, 1823.  Originally part of Jackson County, Gadsden encompassed "all that part of the Territory east of Apalachicola and West of the Suwanee and Alapaha rivers."  The county underwent several changes to its boundaries until 1909.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.  In November of 1849, the Gadsden County courthouse was destroyed by fire, thus many of its earliest records are lost.
Summary:     The series consists of a microfilm copy of the deed records of Gadsden County, Florida from 1849 to 1898.  In the broadest sense, a deed (or conveyance) is a legal instrument by which real property is transferred from one party to another.  Deed books contain many types of title conveyances and contracts.  Among the most common types are warranty deeds, quitclaim deeds, and deeds of gift.  The records in this series include deed books (1849-1898) and direct and reverse indexes to the deed books (1849-1932).  Deed books I - J (1888-1889) were not microfilmed.  Deeds from 1832 to November 1849 were destroyed by fire.
