Biographical/Historical:     When Florida became a state in 1845, the General Assembly established the Circuit Court system.  The Circuit Courts assumed the duties of the Superior Courts.  Franklin County, established in 1832 along the Gulf coast and Apalachicola Bay in north Florida, is part of the Second Judicial Circuit.
    The Circuit Courts originally had exclusive jurisdiction in all cases in equity, also in all cases at law, not heard by inferior courts, and in all cases involving the legality of any tax, assessment, or toll; of all actions involving the titles or boundaries of real estate; and of all criminal cases not heard by inferior courts.  The Circuit Court also had final appellate jurisdiction in all civil and criminal cases arising in the County Court; and appellate jurisdiction of matters arising before County Judges pertaining to probate, estate, or interests of minors.
Summary:     This series contains a letterbook, dated 1894-1907, maintained by the Second Judicial Circuit Court in Franklin County, Florida. The records consist of the outgoing correspondence of R. H. Porter, the Clerk of the Circuit Court.
