Biographical/Historical:     Melbourne, incorporated in 1887, is located along the Indian River in Brevard County on the central Atlantic coast of Florida. The Florida East Coastal Railroad connected to Melbourne in 1893 leading to a growth in its economy.  The Town of Melbourne was reauthorized as a town municipality in 1893 (Ch. 4305, Laws, 1893). The Town Clerk served as tax assessor and collector.  In 1913, the City of Melbourne was established (Ch. 6731, Laws, 1913).
Summary:     This series contains the tax assessment rolls maintained by the Town Clerk's Office for the Town of Melbourne, Florida, from 1895 to 1908.  The tax roll lists the names of taxpayers, a description of the land and property, and the amount of tax paid.  It documents the taxes collected by the Town of Melbourne.
