	Biographical/Historical:	Louisiana's State Constitution of 1898, Article 303, provided for pensions for Confederate veterans and widows in the state of Louisiana. That same year the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana passed Act No. 125 establishing the Board of Pension Commissioners and outlining their powers and duties. A pension not to exceed eight dollars a month was to be allowed to all Confederate veterans who served honorably from their date of enlistment to the close of the war or who were discharged or paroled. The veteran must be indigent and could not be salaried or otherwise provided for by the State of Louisiana or by any other state or government. In addition, the veteran must have lived in the state of Louisiana for five years if he served in a Louisiana unit. If the veteran lived and served in another state, the veteran was required to have lived in Louisana for fifteen years to obtain a pension. The same terms applied for widows of veterans.
	Summary:	This series consists of microfilm of the pension application records for Confederate soldiers who served in the Civil War and lived in Louisiana after the war. These files consist of applications by soldiers or their widows and supporting documentation such as affidavits affirming the soldier's Confederate service, the federal Adjutant General's response to inquiries of the Pension Board providing information on the soldier's service, service documents, and other records relating to the soldier or widow. Soldiers' applications provide name; residence; date and place of birth; where and when enlisted and in what command; names of officers; if wounded, in what battle wounded or how wounded if not in battle; nature of wounds; if lost a limb or an eye; if discharged because of wounds; what soldier did until close of war if discharged or paroled from army; name of surgeon; where located at time of the surrender; if a prisoner, at what camp, when released, and where sent; if took oath of allegiance to United States during the war, where and in what circumstances; how long a resident of Louisiana; if married; size of family; ages of wife and children; number of children; business and income; property and its value; wife's property and its value; how supported himself and family over last five years, and why unable to provide support now; and if uses intoxicants. Widows' applications provide name; name of husband; date husband entered military service; military unit; maiden name; date and place married; date and place of death of husband; how long resided in Louisiana; how husband died and where buried; and value of widow's real and personal property.
