Biographical/Historical:     Legislation of 1891 (Chapter 64) enabled indigent or disabled Confederate veterans living in Tennessee to receive pension payments from the state.  The legislation established a Board of Pension Examiners to consider and make determinations on all such applications.  Beginning in 1905, pensions were also available to soldiers' widows.
Summary:     This series consists of microfilm of pension applications of Tennessee Confederate veterans or their widows.  The applications are accompanied by affidavits of witnesses affirming the soldier's Civil War service.  Soldiers' applications (including those for "colored pension") provide name; residence; military unit; circumstances surrounding, and nature of, wounds and disability; date and place of birth; where enlisted; in what battles wounded; what limbs lost due to wounds; if incapacitated from service by wounds; if married; size of family; ages of wife and children; current business and income; property and its value; wife's property and its value; if supported by family in last five years; if ever in prison, where, and when released; if paroled, where and when; if took oath of allegiance to the United States; and how long a Tennessee resident.
    Widows' applications provide name; residence; length of residence in state; date of birth; maiden name; husband's name and date and place of birth; date and place of marriage; husband's military unit, length of service, where his unit surrendered, if he was present at time of surrender, where and how he left service if not present at time of surrender, and date and place of his death; number and age of children; nature and value of current property; property and income left by husband; and names of family members and their property and means of support.
