Biographical/Historical:     An 1875 Act of the Georgia Legislature mandated statewide registration of births and deaths.  However, few counties complied with this law and even fewer citizens within those counties reported the required information.  By 1876 this effort  on statewide recording of vital statistics was abandoned. There are very few of these records and they exist only for the years 1875 and 1876.  The next effort at statewide registration of births and deaths began in 1919.
Some of the larger cities such as Atlanta and Savannah, did record early births and deaths.  Atlanta began recording births in 1896 and deaths in 1887.  These records are on file with the Fulton County Health Department.  The city of Savannah has death records beginning in 1803.  These records are on file at the Chatham County Health Department.
Summary:     This series contains an index to the death records, the marriage records, and the divorce records for the state of Georgia.  The death records index covers the years 1919 to 1993.  The marriage records index covers the years 1964 to 1992.  The divorce records index covers the years 1965 to 1992.  For both the marriage and divorce records, the material from 1972 is unavailable on microfiche.
The death index is chronological by year and then alphabetical by last name. The first name and middle initial are listed. The index includes the month/day/year of death, race and sex of deceased, county in which death occurred, death certificate number, date filed, age, and county number of residence.
The marriage index is chronological by year and then alphabetical by last name.  It is indexed by both male and female surnames, followed by the first name and middle initials of each. The male names have an asterisk preceeding the first name. The race and county number are listed for the indexed name as well as the date of marriage.  A file number is listed as well.
The divorce index is chronological by year and then alphabetical by last name.  It is indexed by both male and female surnames, followed by the first names and middle initials of the indexed name.  The index lists the age of indexed name, county of divorce and date of occurrence.
