Biographical/Historical:     The Alabama General Assembly passed various types of legislation over the years approving pensions to Confederate veterans and their widows.  "An Act for the relief of Maimed Soldiers" passed March 1, 1881; "For relief by Widows of Confederate Soldiers" passed February 25, 1887; "Relief by Soldiers Maimed or Disabled during the Late (Civil) War" passed February 28, 1889; and "An Alabama Pension Roll Act" passed, September 14, 1923 are just a few of the acts passed.
    Most pension applications were made ca. 1880s - 1930s, though a few were made or reviewed as late as the 1940s - 1960s.  Pensions were paid to survivors' widows up into the 1970s in some cases.  The files were maintained by the Alabama Pension Commission and transferred to the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History upon the death of the pensioner.
Summary:     This series consists of microfilm of pension records for Confederate soldiers serving in the Civil War from Alabama.  The files include applications and supporting documentation submitted by veterans or their widows.  Applications provide information such as veteran's name; date of birth (sometimes); residence at time of enlistment; company; regiment; a synopsis of his military career, including a list of campaigns in which he participated and whether he was killed, captured, or wounded; and his or his widow's financial status at the time of application.  Supporting documentation includes affidavits attesting to the veteran's military service.
