Summary:     This microfilm collection contains the 1900 census soundex rolls for numerous American Indian tribes, including the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Creek Indians (see the roll list of Series S1796 for the full list of enumerated tribes).  A Soundex record will generally include the name of the head of the household, other members of the household, their ages, sex, race, birthplace, and relationship to the head of the household.
    The Soundex is an alphanumeric coding system based on the spelling of the surname. The first letter of the surname is the letter of the code and the remaining letters (minus vowels and certain consonants) are converted into a numeric code.  The Archives contains Soundex coding books which can be used to determine the Soundex code.
    The Soundex is used as an index to determine which Indian Nation and Enumeration District an individual may be found in.  The Soundex also gives the the volume number, sheet number, and line number. Once these values are known, a researcher can go the the 1900 Indian Census to find the record of a particular individual.
