In 1819, the U.S. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams and the Spanish Minister Luis de Onis reached an agreement by which Spain gave the United States title to East and West Florida. The Adams-Onis Treaty, finally ratified by both nations in 1821, dealt with territorial disputes and with the counter property claims of citizens of both countries. The United States paid over $4,000,000 to Americans who proved claims against Spain. The United States also sought to recover the archives and documents which related directly to the property and the sovereignty of Florida. These records were to be used to verify land claims and legal matters. In 1821, the United States sent agents to Cuba in order to secure the records. The agents had partial success in being able to reproduce some of the documents.
Summary:
Included in this collection are correspondence, journals, and reports, dated 1799-1836, of the agents sent to Cuba to retrieve the Florida archives. Those represented in the materials include President Andrew Jackson, Secretary of State John Forsyth, Consuls William Shaler and Nicholas P. Trist, and agents Richard K. Call, Richard Cleveland, Jeremy Robinson, and William Wirt. The collection also contains records relating to the cession of the Floridas and the Adams-Onis Treaty.
