Biographical/Historical:     In 1971, Florida Governor Reubin Askew established the Citizens' Committee on Education and appointed 22 members in July and August of that year (Executive Order 71-40). Legislators and private citizens, rather than educators, comprised membership of the committee. Its purpose was to study and make recommendations on all phases of education in Florida, and to submit a final report to the Legislature, Board of Education, and Governor prior to the convening of the 1973 regular legislative session. The committee dissolved in June 1973.

Summary:     This series contains the incoming, outgoing, and internal correspondence and memoranda of the Citizens' Committee on Education. The records document the committee's role as liaison between Florida's students and educators, and the State Legislature. The records include correspondence with governors, legislators, and education professionals in other states, as well as Floridian citizens in various levels of education. The series also includes legislative updates on proposed bills relating to education, committee meeting materials, and some newspaper clippings.
