In 1970, the House Committee on Criminal Justice (1970-1996, 2005-2006) became a standing committee with a permanent staff under the provisions of Ch. 68-35, Laws. Prior to 1970, the Committee was called the Committee on Crime and Law Enforcement. The committee reviewed legislation on criminal law, criminal procedure, law enforcement, public safety, gun control, sentencing guidelines, the death penalty, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, and animal cruelty.
