	Biographical/Historical:	The Metropolitan Dade County Department of Public Health operated the Cuban Refugee Medical Program with federal funding channeled through the Cuban Refugee Assistance Program of the State Department of Public Welfare (1961-1969) and the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (1969-1983). The program began in 1961 to provide medical screening for arriving Cuban refugees and expanded to include three diagnostic clinics. Most of the clinics' staff were Cuban refugees. The program's screening unit was abolished in 1983. Refugee assistance is currently provided by the Department of Health's Florida Refugee Health Program and by the Refugee Services office of the Department of Children and Families.
	Summary:	This series contains administrative files of the Cuban Refugee Medical Program that document the plans and actions taken to aid Cuban refugees. The records also document the program's interaction with state mental hospitals, tuberculosis hospitals, and nursing homes. The types of records include correspondence with physicians and medical facilities; financial reports; patient and treatment statistics; physician instructions and recommendations; news letters and news clippings; and other documents relative to the Cuban Refugee Medical Unit.
