The series contains a microfilm copy of the East Florida Papers, the archives of the Spanish administration during its "Second Occupation" of East Florida. The majority of the records were created between 1783, when Britain retroceded the area to Spain and 1821, when American authorities took possession of the area as a territory. The material in this collection touches on most aspects of Florida history during the last reign of Spanish control. Spanish policy is revealed in such records as the Governor's correspondence with various authorities in Mexico and with the United States government. Other records, like the correspondence with the Intendant and the Accountant of the Exchequer document the finances of government, while the Panton, Leslie, and Co. papers and the many records of vessels' entries and clearances are important commercial documents. Military matters are discussed in the correspondence of the Captain-General; the Dept. of War and Navy; the Commandants of Gunboats, Colored Militia, and Artillery; the Council of War; and with the militia personnel at posts on the St. Johns River, the St. Mary's River, and Amelia Island. Records relating to individual citizens include memorials and concessions, marriage licenses (1785-1803), census returns (1784-1814), and oaths of allegiance (1790-1821).
Certain series, notably the Montiano letters (1737-1741), the Papers on Military Posts on the St. John's River and Amelia Island (1740-1815), Royal Treasury Accounts (1741-1821), Records of Testamentary Proceedings (1756-1821), Accounts of Jesse Fish (1763-1770), Papers on Negro Titles, Runaways, etc. (1737-1805), and the Index of Royal Decrees (1595-1762), relate to the earlier period of Spanish control; and several series, the letters to and from the Bishop and Curate (1786-1824), Miscellaneous Accounts and Bills Due (1823-1826), Miscellaneous Papers (1784-1858), and Papers on the Transfer of Archives to the United States (1821-1824) date from after 1821.
