The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note: The United States Marine Corps was created by an act of Congress on July, 11, 1798.  From that time it has served as the Navy's flexible force for discipline among the sailors,  as sharpshooters in the rigging of sailing men of war, as boarding parties, as landing parties of naval infantry and in the twentieth century air power projection/close air support was added to the continuing traditional duties.
Public Law 416 of 1952 fixed the size and general configuration of the Marine Corps in the 20th Century.  It was updated once to make the Commandant of the Marine Corps a full participating member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff rather than a participant in only Marine Corps affecting actions.
