The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:     The Board of Phosphate Commissioners was created in 1891 to control and manage the mining of phosphate in the beds of the navigable waters of the State of Florida (Ch. 4043, Laws of Florida).  It was authorized to enter into contracts with phosphate mining companies; appoint an Inspector of Phosphates; and institute legal proceedings against non-complying companies.  The Board met until 1901 when the responsibilities for phosphate control passed to the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund, the Commissioner of Agriculture, and the State Geologist.
