The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:     The State Department of Education was created in 1939 (Ch. 19355, Laws of Florida).  It acted as an administrative agency under the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to carry out policies and duties authorized by law or by the State Board of Education.  It assumed the duties of the Department of Public Instruction, which had administered the state system of public education since 1869 (Ch. 1686, Laws).  In 1969, the department became the Department of Education, and the Commissioner of Education replaced the State Superintendent of Public Instruction as chief educational officer of the state (Ch. 69-106, Laws).
