Description: Justice Rosemary Barkett was born in 1939 in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and moved to Miami at age 6. Although she spent eight years as a nun after graduating from high school, Barkett left the convent to pursue her education in law. She received a B.S. from Spring Hill College in 1967 and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida's College of Law in 1970. She entered into private practice for several years before being appointed as a circuit court judge in 1979 by Governor Bob Graham. Barkett ultimately served as the first woman on the Florida Supreme Court in 1985 and became Chief Justice seven years later. She was inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame in 1986. Barkett also served as a federal judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit from 1994-2013, whereupon she retired.
