Description: Alicia Baro was born in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, on August 1, 1918. Baro championed Hispanic rights in Florida and was instrumental in the formation of the Puerto Rican Democrats Organization, the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women, the Coalition of Hispanic American Women, the Women Chamber of Commerce of South Florida. In 1981, she formed ASPIRA of Florida, a non-profit organization dedicated to leadership development in Puerto Rican and Latina/Latino youth. She was inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame in 1997. Baro passed away January 2, 2012, in Miami.
